Current PDT treatments available in UK
In the UK, PDT is currently available for skin, head and neck, mouth, lung and oesophageal (gullet) cancers.
Whilst many of the treatments are palliative and undertaken with the intention of improving patients' quality of life, research and experience has led to an increasing number of cancer treatments being undertaken in early stage disease with the intention of cure.
Researchers are working to identify other types of cancer for which PDT is most effective.
Experimentally it is being developed for brain, pancreatic, bile duct, vulval, penile and prostate cancers.
Moreover, research trials are looking at new photosensitising agents, new laser and non-laser light treatments.
